then League One can also boast of its new trio of former top-flight sides
Norwich, Southampton and Charlton. These fallen stars will be jostling
with Leeds United, other high-flyers from the not too distant past, who
are strong favourites for promotion according to the Sporting Index
outright index spread markets.
Leeds have managed (so far) to hold on to the much sought after talents of
£8m-rated defender Fabian Delph, and buyers of their season points total
spread will hope that this statement remains true on transfer deadline
day. Spread buyers of Leeds' outright index last season will remember with
mixed feelings how manager Simon Grayson was drafted in just days before
Christmas and managed to lead a spirited turnaround in the team's
fortunes, before missing out on automatic promotion by just a few points.
With a shot at promotion from the outset in 2009/10, Grayson will be
counting on his other star player, Jermaine Beckford, to continue the form
he showed last season. Regular buyers and sellers of individual goal
minutes spreads throughout the season will be more likely to consider
buying than selling those of Beckford, who scored an impressive 34 goals
in all competitions last term. He netted three hat-tricks and no less than
eight braces. From February until the end of the season, he scored in
every match he played at Elland Road bar one (12 goals in eight games),
and posted an impressive average goal-minute make-up of 76 minutes in
these matches.
A name making his return to League One which fans of Sporting Index's goal-minutes
spreads should look out for is Grant Holt, a recent buy for Norwich City
from Shrewsbury. The 28-year old forward scored five in a single match in
October last year, including three in the last ten minutes which
significantly added to a majestic individual 286 goal minutes. However, he
is likely to garner attention from those football spread punters fond of
another of the popular markets, the bookings index spread. Buyers of any
of Norwich's bookings spreads for games this season will hope Holt is able
to contribute as he did last season, when he was shown 14 yellow cards for
his club.
Among the other favourites for the title, Paul Ince returns to MK Dons to
finish what he started two years ago. Buyers of their points total spread
this season will note that the club formerly known as Wimbledon scored 87
points last year, the most of any team remaining in League One from 08/09.
Spread sellers however will
wonder how the team will react to Roberto Di Matteo's departure for the
West Midlands, and whether Ince is able to replicate the success he bought
to the Dons in overseeing their escape from League Two in 07/08. If he
can, buyers of the points spread could well be in for a treat – the team
topped the table with 97 points that year.
